This indicator shows the percentage of adults who had serious mental illness in the past year.
Serious mental illness is defined as having a diagnosable mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder, other than a developmental or substance use disorder, that met the criteria found in the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) and resulted in serious functional impairment.
Why is this important?
Serious mental illness (SMI) results in serious functional impairment, which substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities. SMI includes major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, and borderline personality disorder. Without treatment, SMI disorders may result in substantial social and economic costs for affected individuals and the larger community. However early detection and effective treatment of serious mental illness can reduce symptoms and lead to an improved quality of life.
